A Scientometric view of some Biological disciplines in Chile Biol. Res.
KRAUSKOPF,MANUEL.
During the last decade the articles published by Chilean Research Centers grew 1,73 which compares to the 2.34 fold increase of mainstream research articles registered as a whole in Latin America. However, the relative impact of the Chilean publications surpassed that of Latin America. In Biological Sciences, traditionally the strongest research area within Chile, Latin America also shows a steeper slope of growth. Qualitatively, biological disciplines in Chile are comparable to those published in Latin America although in Chile there are specialties as Physiology that surpass the average world's impact. The scientometric data is consistent with the fall in individual grants that the Chilean Research Fund (FONDECYT) has been allocating during the last...

A segment and epithelium specific messenger ribonucleic acid fragment up-regulated by estradiol in the rat oviduct Biol. Res.
RIOS,MARIANA; OJEDA,SUANY; VELASQUEZ,LUIS A; MAISEY,KEVIN; CROXATTO,HORACIO B.
Estradiol accelerates oviductal embryo transport in the rat through changes of genomic expression in oviductal cells. However, the genes involved are unknown. We used a differential display by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to detect estradiol (E2)-dependent genes in the rat oviduct. Rats on day 2 of pregnancy were untreated or treated with 10 µg of E2 and the oviducts were extracted at 30, 180 and 360 min later and used to isolate RNA. Products of reverse transcriptase-PCR, made with pairs of arbitrary and oligo-deoxythymidine primers, were separated on denaturing polyacrylamide gels and candidate bands were excised and reamplified. Truly positive cDNA fragments determined by a single strand conformation polymorphism assay were cloned and...

A semi-quantitative assay to screen for angiogenic compounds and compounds with angiogenic potential using the EA.hy926 endothelial cell line Biol. Res.
ARANDA,EVELYN; OWEN,GARETH I.
Angiogenesis, the development of new capillary vessels, has a host of clinical manifestations. The identification of agents that increase or decrease angiogenesis is of great pharmaceutical interest. Classically, in vitro angiogenesis utilizes human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) grown in matrigel. This valid and simple method has the drawbacks that each cell population is distinct and the constraint of obtaining primary source material. Herein we utilize the established EA.hy926 endothelial cell line as our model for in vitro angiogenesis and present a novel formula to quantify endothelial cell remodeling to identify pro- and anti-angiogenic agents. Furthermore, our technique details the procedures to identify and quantify compounds that have...

A simple and effective pressure culture system modified from a transwell cell culture system Biol. Res.
Sun,Xuerong; Liu,Xinguang; Zhang,Yuehong; Kuang,Xielan; Lv,Bo; Ge,Jian.
Mechanical pressure plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. Mimicking the mechanical pressure present in vitro is necessary for related research, but usually requires expensive and complicated equipment. In this study we created a simple pressure culture system based on the transwell culture system. By cutting off the top rim of the transwell insert, the cells were compressed between the insert membrane and the well floor. The new pressure culture system was proven effective in that it induced cell morphological change, integrin β1 upregulation, actin polymerization and growth change in rat retinal ganglion cells, human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and mice embryonic fibroblasts. Though the pressure value is...

A simple and rapid identification method for newly emerged porcine Deltacoronavirus with loop-mediated isothermal amplification Biol. Res.
Zhang,Fanfan; Ye,Yu; Song,Deping; Guo,Nannan; Peng,Qi; Li,Anqi; Zhou,Xingrong; Chen,Yanjun; Zhang,Min; Huang,Dongyan; Tang,Yuxin.
Abstract Background Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a newly emerged enteropathogenic coronavirus that causes diarrhea and mortality in neonatal piglets. PDCoV has spread to many countries around the world, leading to significant economic losses in the pork industry. Therefore, a rapid and sensitive method for detection of PDCoV in clinical samples is urgently needed. Results In this study, we developed a single-tube one-step reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay specific for nucleocapsid gene to diagnose and monitor PDCoV infections. The detection limit of RT-LAMP assay was 1 × 101 copies of PDCoV, which was approximately 100-fold more sensitive than gel-based one-step reverse transcription polymerase chain...

la Jara,Jorge Jimenez de; Bastias,Gabriel; Ferreccio,Catterina; Moscoso,Cristian; Sagues,Sofia; Cid,Camilo; Bronstein,Eduardo; Herrera,Cristian; Nervi,Bruno; Corvalan,Alejandro; Velasquez,Ethel V; Gonzalez,Pamela; Castellon,Enrique; Bustamante,Eva; Oñate,Sergio; McNerney,Eileen; Sullivan,Richard; Owen,Gareth I.
INTRODUCTION: The South American country Chile now boasts a life expectancy of over 80 years. As a consequence, Chile now faces the increasing social and economic burden of cancer and must implement political policy to deliver equitable cancer care. Hindering the development of a national cancer policy is the lack of comprehensive analysis of cancer infrastructure and economic impact. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate existing cancer policy, the extent of national investigation and the socio-economic impact of cancer to deliver guidelines for the framing of an equitable national cancer policy. METHODS: Burden, research and care-policy systems were assessed by triangulating objective system metrics -epidemiological, economic, etc. - with political and policy analysis....

A spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitor attenuates the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells Biol. Res.
Seo,Hyang‑Hee; Kim,Sang Woo; Lee,Chang Youn; Lim,Kyu Hee; Lee,Jiyun; Choi,Eunhyun; Lim,Soyeon; Lee,Seahyoung; Hwang,Ki‑Chul.
Abstract Background Pathologic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration after vascular injury promotes the development of occlusive vascular disease. Therefore, an effective chemical agent to suppress aberrant proliferation and migration of VSMCs can be a potential therapeutic modality for occlusive vascular disease such as atherosclerosis and restenosis. To find an anti-proliferative chemical agent for VSMCs, we screened an in-house small molecule library, and the selected small molecule was further validated for its anti-proliferative effect on VSMCs using multiple approaches, such as cell proliferation assays, wound healing assays, transwell migration assays, and ex vivo aortic ring assay. Results Among 43 initially screened...

A study on β-defensin-2 and histatin-5 as a diagnostic marker of early childhood caries progression Biol. Res.
Jurczak,Anna; Kościelniak,Dorota; Papież,Monika; Vyhouskaya,Palina; Krzyściak,Wirginia.
BACKGROUND: Recently, a continuous growth of interest has been observed in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the light of an alarming increase in resistance of bacteria and fungi against antibiotics. AMPs are used as biomarkers in diagnosis and monitoring of oral cavity pathologies. Therefore, the determination of specific protein profiles in children diagnosed with early childhood caries (ECC) might be a basis for effective screening tests and specialized examinations which may enable progression of disease METHODS: The objective of the studies was to determine the role of histatin-5 and β-defensing-2 as a diagnostic marker of early childhood caries progression. In this work, results of concentration determination of two salivary proteins...

Abnormal Electrophysiological Activation in Schizophrenics during a Personal Traits Attribution Task Biol. Res.
SILVA,JAIME R; TORRES,WALTER M; ORTIZ,MANUEL S.
Changes in personal identity have been described as a major component in the expression of schizophrenia. Considering current evidence that relates the cortical structures of the medial line with the self, we hypothesize that there are differences in the frontomedial electrophysiological activation in schizophrenics when compared to normal subjects during tasks that require this function. In an experimental design, 9 schizophrenic and 7 normal subjects participated in a personal traits attribution task regarding the attribution of the self, another person and a simple reading. Electric brain activity was recorded with a dense array of 128 electrodes, with evoked brain potentials being obtained for the three conditions. Considering the evoked potential...

Acclimatization to chronic intermittent hypoxia in mine workers: a challenge to mountain medicine in Chile Biol. Res.
Farias,Jorge G; Jimenez,Daniel; Osorio,Jorge; Zepeda,Andrea B; Figueroa,Carolina A; Pulgar,Victor M.
In the past two decades, Chile has developed intense mining activity in the Andes mountain range, whose altitude is over 4,000 meters above sea level. It is estimated that a workforce population of over 55,000 is exposed to high altitude hypobaric hypoxia. The miners work under shift systems which vary from 4 to 20 days at the worksite followed by rest days at sea level, in a cycle repeated for several years. This Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia (CIH) constitutes an unusual condition for workers involving a series of changes at the physiological, cellular and molecular levels attempting to compensate for the decrease in the environmental partial pressure of oxygen (PO2). The mine worker must become acclimatized to CIH, and consequently undergoes an acute...

Accumulation of Antioxidants in Apricot Fruit through Ripening: Characterization of a Genotype with Enhanced Functional Properties Biol. Res.
Hegedüs,Attila; Pfeiffer,Péter; Papp,Nóra; Abrankó,László; Blázovics,Anna; Pedryc,Andrzej; Stefanovits-Bányai,Éva.
Two apricot genotypes, 'Gonci magyarkajszi' and 'Preventa' were assayed at three ripening stages for flesh color indices (L*, a*, b*, C* and Hº), contents of total phenolics and vitamin C, and both water- and lipid-soluble antioxidant capacities (ferric reducing antioxidant power; 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity; total radical scavenging activity; and Photochem lipid-soluble antioxidant capacity) to compare their dynamics in the accumulation of antioxidant compounds and capacities through ripening. The increase in a*, b* and C* and decrease in Hº during ripening represented a color shift from green to yellow and orange due to carotenoid accumulation. Parallel to carotenoid accumulation, contents of total phenolics and vitamin C and...

Acidobacteria appear to dominate the microbiome of two sympatric Caribbean Sponges and one Zoanthid Biol. Res.
O'Connor-Sánchez,Aileen; Rivera-Domínguez,Adán J; De los Santos-Briones,César; López-Aguiar,Lluvia K; Peña-Ramírez,Yuri J; Prieto-Davo,Alejandra.
BACKGROUND: Marine invertebrate-associated microbial communities are interesting examples of complex symbiotic systems and are a potential source of biotechnological products. RESULTS: In this work, pyrosequencing-based assessment from bacterial community structures of sediments, two sponges, and one zoanthid collected in the Mexican Caribbean was performed. The results suggest that the bacterial diversity at the species level is higher in the sediments than in the animal samples. Analysis of bacterial communities' structure showed that about two thirds of the bacterial diversity in all the samples belongs to the phyla Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria. The genus Acidobacteriumappears to dominate the bacterial community in all the samples, reaching almost...
